A Brand New Integration Platform that would Change Sound System Designs: Q-Sys

Q-Sys is the new system integration platform of the American origin QSC Audio company, who are especially known in Turkey for their first class amplifiers. This integration concept both caters for the requirements of all of the signal processing requirements as well as controlling and monitoring of each of the components from the first signal source to the loudspeaker.

It caters for all situations where the efficiency of the system is required in all senses in locations that specially extends over larger areas like, stadiums, performing arts stages, multi purpose lounges, conference complexes, hotels, professional and training premises and transport systems through its unbelievable capacity as the Q-Sys has been designed for large scale applications.

The most important component of the system, the heart of the system: Core. These equipments, which are manufactured in various dimensions in terms of their signal processing capabilities, are offered in wide ranging varieties from 32 channel processing capacity to 256×256 channel matrix capacity under type names of Core-250i, Core-500i, Core-1000, Core-3000 and Core-4000. This equipment, which incorporates all of the signal processing capabilities, both performs the managing functions of input and output units of all of the system as well as allowing its programming and user interfaces for the network use through its internal web server by means of its central processing architecture.

When all of the intelligence of the system is required to be collected at one point, it allows for the designer to connect a second core in order that the system can be completely backed up. This means that all of the system capabilities and all of the system capacity can be backed up 100% through one step.

Although the centre of the system is arranged under single point, inputs and outputs to be connected on to the system can be distributed around local centres through input/output modules called, I/O Frame. This in turn, allows for easier and less cabling and provide for the sound signals to be transferred over shorter distances as much as possible and hence this means that the sound is distorted much less.

Core’s and I/O Frame’s, which are the backbones of the system, communicate with each other over one Gigabit Ethernet network. This network is not required to be a special network as it is then case for similar sound systems. In other words, it is possible to eliminate the need to have all of the extra cabling by using the network that caters for all of the other services of the structure inclusive of the internet use at the same time.

There are four units of slots available on each of the I/O Frames, where input or output cards can be connected and the cards connected on these slots provide 16 channel input or output per frame whether these are analogue or digital sound signals or Data Port cards that are developed by QSC and from which all of the features of an amplifier can be monitored, or not.

QSC equipments are known with their stabilities and reliabilities. However, back up is still required for some situations. When we are to mention system back up capabilities, we are faced with an unrivalled speed and accuracy. Q-Sys allows for back up architecture in four different forms, which can be used together or separately:

1. Network Back up: All of the equipments as components of the system can operate on the same network as well as on two separate networks. That is, while they operate on a independent network switch as the primary network, they can use the structure network as the secondary network (back up). This in turn will mean that if there is problem on the special network for any reason, the sound system will continue to work without any problems.
2. Core Back up: For the case of single or double network use, one Core can also be backed up. Therefore, when a problem occurs on the primary Core, the second Core will takeover without any delay (even without noticing the changeover).
3. I/O Frame Back up: As it is the case for the Core, I/O Frame modules can be backed up fully or partially. On other words, while a single frame can be used for situations, when back up is not required that much and for situations dictate that back up is necessary the back up can be applied.
4. Amplifier Back up: When one of the amplifiers connected on to the system has a problem, then back up amplifier back up system as an integrated component of the system can switch on and take over as the back up amplifier in place of the problematic amplifier.
The most important strength of the Q-Sys is the fact that the features of the network it uses are standard ones. In other words, special network equipments are nor required for this system. The system has processing time of under 2.5 milliseconds from switching 10 networks on any input until an output is obtained on any of the ports.
The design software of Q-Sys, which has very efficient interface in terms of the system design, can be downloaded free of charge from the web site of QSC Audio (www.qscaudio.com). A multi layer design can be performed with the software through the drag and drop method with the use of an interface that is not complex.

The only point that strikes us when we look at the processor performance of the system in general is the POWER. The time for a program, which is created by making every signal to go through every processing as much as possible in a system that has 128 inputs and 128 outputs and which has been designed in order to put burden on the system, to be loaded on the Core and becoming available for operation is measured with seconds. This time is more than enough for it to leave its competitors behind by long margin.
All of the functions that could be required by a system designer have been uploaded inside of the Core. Crossover, Delay, Limiter, Ducker, ANC (Automatic Noise Compensator), AGC (Automatic Gain Control), Compressor, Noise Gate, tens of different types of Equalisers, Mixers and Matrix Mixers and very advanced signal generator and 16 channel media executive programs integrated on the system as standard (can be increased up to 64 channels) are some of those. Besides, programmable logic control ports, which would provide the compatibility with other systems, are available together with the system.

There is not a software available in addition for the user interface that could be prepared for the users, where they could easily perform required controls and monitor state of all of the system following programming of all of these capabilities in an easy way and starting after uploading them. The system, which can be controlled by being connected on to a web browser like the Internet Explorer, offers these web pages itself. Q-Sys, which can also be controlled and monitored through iOS devices like iPad and iPhone as well as through stylish looking and reliable touch type screen panels that are manufactured by QSC, provides great flexibility through user recognition with varying authorisations. For example, while announcements, recorded messages are sent either to the stands in stadiums or to the 100V system in the covered locations through the microphone panels with key pad that are used for stadium management, maintenance personnel can monitor the system through their own iPad’s they have with them and can obtain fault reports and can intervene immediately.
Desk top and wall microphone panels, which make many functions easy for the users, can also be connected on to the system simply through an single network cable. The microphone panels, which obtain their energy requirements over the same cable with the use of Power Over Ethernet (PoE) technology, allows for the usage of users who have different levels of authorisations through key pads available on them.

There is only one thing that could be said about the Q-Sys with all of these features of it and that is; It is the only solution you have the requirement for!
